Hi, my name is Tira, and I am the author of “The Waggy Dog Tales” and also the hooman mummy to Dooey, Ronnie, and Keef, the stars of the book and animation.
My journey into discovering a passion for writing children’s books began with my wonderful dogs and all their fans. I have been obsessed with animals for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was lucky enough to have dogs, cats, rodents, horses, and chickens. I later ended up having a career in riding and training horses for many years, as well as walking other people’s dogs.
So, how did I start? Over the years, people would, and still do to this day, come over to say hello and comment on how beautiful and unique all my dogs are, from personality to appearance. A few people would say, “You should write a kid’s book about them…”
A few years later, I moved to Surrey with my partner and became a full-time step mum to his fabulous children. Finding I now had more time on my hands, I started playing with story ideas, which, to my surprise, came quite naturally. You’ll find that my tales are based on actual events. However, I can only use my imagination for the doggies’ conversations.
My three dogs are all adopted and mean the world to me; if you are also a dog lover, I’m sure you’ll understand how they are important members of your family. I thought this was a fantastic way to pay tribute to the many years of joy they have brought me, and unlike horses, I wasn’t worried about falling and breaking a bone.
And now my dogs have given me another gift, the gift of letting out my creative, fun side. There will be lots more books to come as the floodgates have opened, and I’m now looking to create a second series called “My Pony Tales,” which will be individual stories about ponies, using my lifetime of being a keen equestrian to help write each tale.
Within my books, you will find plenty of moral dilemmas and important lessons for children to discover and learn about, such as empathy, sharing, understanding others’ emotions, rules, and boundaries, etc., all amongst a fun and exciting storyline. But most importantly, to encourage children off screens and into books, they need a story that makes them laugh, love the characters, and want to turn the pages to discover what happens next.
I’ve decided to do something I have not seen any other author of children’s books do; I’ve written the same story in two books, so it’s available for younger ages in picture book form and also available for more advanced readers aged 9 and above. As I was writing and designing my picture book, I thought, what a shame so many kids, including my partner’s and my friend’s children who are now older, would miss out on this super cool story. So, I decided to have my own niche in the author world.
